The Strobilus Shawl is inspired by the shape of a woodland pinecone or Strobilus, with a spiral of irregular pentagon shaped scales. Each section of the shawl represents one of these scales. This pattern is designed to use scraps of leftover yarn or minis. Alternatively you can use one colour for a more cohesive look. This shawl is really very simple, so you can relax and enjoy how the yarn is working up. Each panel is joined as you go, has short row shaping and Icord edging. Tutorials are linked in the pattern to help you with picking up stitches on the Icord, Icord bind off and Icord grafting. Instructions are for both fingering and DK weight yarn. The price on my website includes VAT, if you purchasing from outside the UK you may find it cheaper on Raverly.

Requirements

Use either:

240g Fingering / 4ply weight yarn. You can use 24 x 10g or 12 x 20g minis.

Or 480g Double Knit weight yarn. You can use 24 x 20g minis.

One Stitch marker to mark your short rows.

3.5 mm [4.5mm] circular or long straight needles for 4ply [DK] version. I would recommend a minimum of 50cm (20 inch) cable for circular needles or straight needles that are at least 25cm (9.8 inches).

Gauge
Using Fingering [DK] weight yarn, garter stitch 7 [6] stitches per inch, 10 [8] rounds per inch. The fingering weight [DK] version of the shawl is 122cm / 48inches [140cm / 55inches] long on the inside (shortest) edge and 262cm / 103inches [290cm / 114inches] across the fanned edge. Gauge is not important; however you may run out of yarn if your gauge is very loose.
